A Promising Talent in Women’s Tennis: Victoria Azarenka
In the WTA World Rankings, Victoria Azarenka is the 9th ranked player. Victoria Azarenka has shown a lot of ups and downs in the year 2010.
The ability to make it to the deep rounds of tournaments has been demonstrated by Victoria Azarenka. She has managed to advance to the finals one time, the semifinals once, and the quarterfinals twice in her tournaments this year. Her ability to get to those late rounds is great, but she has struggled when she has encountered the top players in the game in those late rounds.
On the year, Victoria Azarenka has a record of 16-6. To players in the top 10 of the WTA World Rankings, 4 of her 6 losses have come. Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (note: one of these losses was a withdrawal) are the same player to whom the other two losses have come to.
Powerful shots are what Azarenka is known for. A great backhand stroke is included, which some consider to be the best in the game. With the exception of her serve, she is effective in almost every area of the game. Throughout her career, her serve has been inaccurate, inconsistent, and weak. It is difficult to play at a high level while you have a weak serve. At times she makes a lot of unforced errors though her forehand is usually serviceable. When her forehand is struggling, she is susceptible to be beaten by some of the weaker players in the world.
Azarenka has enjoyed a solid season, but in order to be called one of the elite players of women’s tennis she still has some work to do. She may step to the next level, if she can figure out how to beat those top players in the late rounds of tournaments.
