The tournament usually has a German flavor and The BMW Open is the first tour level event on the men’s calendar this year. This year, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Nicolas Kiefer, and Ranier Schuettler lead the German contingent. Kohlschreiber won the title here in 2007, Kiefer is trying to comeback from an injury, and Schuettler is trying to regain the form that made him a top 20 player a couple years ago. Current stars Marin Cilic and Mikhail Youzhny will be looking to make this title their own as well although Tomas Berdych is the defending champ here at this ATP 250 level event in Munich. Marcos Baghdatis will be coming to Munich as part of his clay court season, as an extra bonus for the German tennis fans, one of the most exciting players on tour. As a tennis tournament, The BMW Open is as much of a social event in Germany. The public involved in the tournament as much as possible, and it is made sure by the tournament. For both the fans and players there are pro-ams, family programs and nightlife. For some time, BMW has been a loyal sponsor of the event.
